Dream Projection Interior Educators(IE) UK Award 2024: Interior Futures (PROGRESSIVE SHORTLISTED) Arts Hub Design - 2024 Client: The Kings School Brief: New public facing arts hub occupying the remnants of the former Blackfriars Abbey 1260AD on the river Stour This project has been put forward by the Kings school Canterbury to explore possible improvements to the former Blackfriars refectory building in central Canterbury, which has been in use by the school’s art department since 1983. The building date from 1236-1260 and is an important fragment of a much larger monastic composition which has now been largely lost. Both the school and the art department have grown significantly since the 1983 conversion works. The building is in need of expansion to cater for increased demands for classrooms and to provide a better area for sculpture. At the same time, the school has recently acquired the Beerling hall, the former Blackfriars Guest Range, which is directly across the river stour from the Blackfriars Refectory Range. This former guest house building has been dated to C1350 and was added to the Blackfriars Monastic Grouping after the main ranges had been completed. It once stood on an island in the river Stour and was likely connected to the site of the main buildings by at least two bridges. "To take a rest and enjoy your imagination"
